Misc. Notes
He is the architect of many remarkable buildings in the centre of Helsinki which still remain. Examples of buildings: Ulrikankatu 1 and 3, Bulevardi 11, Maneesinktu 1-2, Vironkatu 9 (Estnäsgatan), Albertinkatu 17-19 and 22 A, Meritullinkatu 15 (Sjötullsgatan), Kirkonkatu 14, Mariankatu 19, Rauhankatu 11 (Fredsgatan), Luotsikatu 3 (Lotsgatan), Pietarinkatu 18 (Petersgatan), Ratakatu 8 (Bangatan), Kapteeninkatu 4-6, Laivasillankatu 10 (Skeppsbrogatan), Iso Robertinkatu 17-19 (Stora Robertsgatan) and Tehtaankatu 32 C-D (Fabriksgatan).
He was heavily critized by his probably envious colleagues who said he was too productive and that his plans were not strict enough.
During his studies at the Institute of Technology he was already drawing construction plans for boats. In 1914 he left his job as an architect and started constructing boats full time. One of his most unusual yachts was the schooner Marsca, a big yacht with liftable keel, which was launched in 1901. The schooner was used by the activist Konni Zilliacus to transport the illegal magazine “Fria Ord” (Free Words), printed in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, through the quite demanding archipelago to Finland.
A.G. Estlander´ s break-through as an internationally known constructor was the archipelago cruiser Colibri II with which he defeated the the Swedish sailing elite in the Round Gotland Race from Sandhamn.
The key to success was to build extremely light boats which still met the strict rules set for these competition yachts.
1916-1920 he was Vice Commodor of the oldest Finnish Yacht Club, Nyländska Jaktklubben, NJK. Gustaf Estlander took part in more than 1500 yacht races.
It is also worthwhile mentioning that in 1893 he became European champion in ice scating!
And in 1894 he sailed with a canoe to Sweden. History does not tell wether he met his wife in connection with this trip, but it is possible.
In 1919 he moved to Germany in the Berlin region and worked at the shipsbuileder Abeking & Rasmussen.
In 1921 he start working as a boatdesignet at Pakstwerf in Berlin,
In 1922 the Pakstwerf was edtrsoyed in a heavy fire together with all the boats inside.
After that he moved back to Sweden.
