In 1876 he founded the magazine “Finsk tidskrift” in which he presented his ideals and in 1885 he founded “Svenska Litteratursällskapet in Finland” which became a wealthy foundation which still today gives financial support to active and succeful people who works in favour for the Finnish Swedish culture. Because of this he achieved a status of being the leader for the Finnsih Swedish community in Finland. He acted chairman of the board for 12 years and after that as an honorable chairman until his death in 1910. Cocnerning art in all forms he was extremely active and interested and on his initiative the school of art, the Ateneum was built in a very center location in in Helsinki, the capital of Finland. To day the beautiful Atenum building act as an art museum exposing very famous artists not only from Finland but from all over the world.
In 1898 he was ennobled and in 1901 he became the first Finnish citizen to be nominated for the Nobel prize. His beuatiful grave can be seen in The Old Cemetery in Helsinki. On his tombstone raised by Littertursällskapet, is a sculptural potrait of him made by the highly appreciated sculptor Walter Runeberg. Carl Gustaf Estlander and his father-in-law, Berndt Federley, were in their time two highly respected men. C-G Estlander died on his 50th wedding day. |
