Misc. Notes |
When his son should go to school his parents negociated with the local authorities how to choose a suitable surname. The local authorities suggested to them to take the name Avellanus because on their yard was groving a “corylus avellana” hazelnuttree. So he got the surname Avellanus which was two generations later changed to Avellan. The first time the hazelnuttree is written Avellana in history is 149 b. Chr. when Cato Sr wrote it. So in a way the surname Avellanus has an unusually old history. |
